As a fashion house that epitomises contemporary Parisian elegance with, dare we say, a dash of sophisticated French nonchalance; we are beyond excited to have added CELINE to our collection of exclusive eyewear.
Under the new creative director, Hedi Slimane, the label’s eyewear draws influence from retro design. No matter where you look in the range, you’ll find effortless elegance in the bold, clean lines of the designs and pure luxury in the premium finishes.
A look back in time...
Founded by Céline Vipiana in 1945, CELINE began life as a shop on Rue Malte in Paris, selling made-to-measure shoes for children. As her children’s shoe business expanded to three shops, Céline’s eye turned towards women’s clothing and a little over a decade after the launch of her first venture, she branched out with a ready-to-wear range. It was fashion aimed squarely at the everyday woman, with practicality to the fore.
During the 1960s Céline expanded her business further, adding women’s shoes, accessories, a sportswear collection and a fragrance called Vent Fou. CELINE the brand was in demand and so global expansion beckoned in the 1970s. The label opened stores in Beverley Hills, Hong Kong and Tokyo, as well as Geneva, Rome and Monte Carlo amongst others.
A brand, however, can’t stay in the limelight forever, no matter how chic it is. And so the 1980s proved to be a lost decade for CELINE as it took a backseat to other fashion houses who were having their day in the sun. It was during this period that the luxury powerhouse LVMH took an interest and added CELINE to its portfolio. Céline herself, however, remained and continued to design until she died aged 84 in 1997.
Since then, CELINE has been home to quite a few creative directors, including Michael Kors who brought new success to the label until he left in 2004. There then followed a few turbulent years until Phoebe Philo took the reins and was hailed the new saviour of the label.
The future looks bright...
