Eye Health - Glaucoma

It’s World Glaucoma Week!

As you may already know, glaucoma is the most common cause of sight loss globally, with more and more people struggling from it every day. From being diagnosed to getting to grips with treatments, glaucoma can affect your everyday life. But what is glaucoma and are there any warning signs to look out for?

Glaucoma is caused by a build-up of pressure in the eyeball, which mainly affects peripheral vision, but if left untreated can damage the optic nerve and lead to irreversible blindness. Early diagnosis is essential to prevent further deterioration – with laser treatment, eye drops and surgery all options to stop it worsening. Any damage to the optic nerve, unfortunately, cannot be undone.

Symptoms of acute glaucoma may include:

  • Loss of sight

  • Pain in your eye

  • Headaches

  • Blurred vision or a halo around lights

  • Feeling sick or vomiting

  • Redness in the white of your eye

The best defence against glaucoma and any eye condition, in fact, is early detection, which is why eye examinations are so important. A regular check-up is the single most important thing you can do to protect your vision. Here at Eye Academy, we also offer a specialist Glaucoma Health Check clinic to ensure that we can detect and treat glaucoma patients.
